I watched 2 unusual movies this week.

First up was Driving Lessons starring Rupert Grint and Julie Walters. They play mother and son (Molly and Ron Weasley) in the Harry Potter films and in this, she's the older woman who helps him to grow.
It's a coming-of-age movie and it put me in mind of Harold and Maude. It was quirky and sweet and different and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Really fine acting all around. Laura Linney plays his overly religious hypocritical mother.

Next was Bug, starring Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. (His role was small but intimidating.)

This movie was not at all what I'd been expecting. I thought it was going to be a sci-fi/horror flick when it was actually a psychological thriller. I don't want to give anything away so I won't say a lot. There were scenes where I had to cover my eyes....one that involves a big fear of mine, brrrrrrrr. It isn't a bloodless movie- just very different. I didn't think I liked it when it was over but I keep going over it in my mind and would like to see it again. You know it's not a bad thing when you can't get it out of your mind.

William Friedkin directed this and the main male character was new to me. He played the same role when it was a play and Friedkin insisted on having him. Very good choice, imo.

All in all, 2 movies worth seeing. :)

Any other recommendations?

The last DVD I rented was Rent, and although the ending was very cliched, I really enjoyed the whole movie, you probably won't like it if you don't like musicals obviously, but I am a fan, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Rent. I was curious about Bug and after your review, I'm going to rent it next.

I love Driving Lessons. It was a 'nice' film! I'm really desperate to see Bug.

A good film I can reccomend is The Last King of Scotland

Yup - I can't wait to see it. It's going to be fucking terrible.

I'm such a dork.

We've always loved Batman- all incarnations, especially the animated ones. (Except Batman Beyond- not a huge fan of that one...) I'm partial to the ones in which Kevin Conroy voiced Batman and Mark Hamill voiced the Joker.

Last night we rented the coolest, most ass-kickingest Batman of them all, imo.

Batman VS. Dracula.

It was so cool! In this one, Rino Romano is voicing Batman, Peter Stormare is Dracula and Kevin Michael Richardson is Joker. Tom Kenny (SpongeBob!) is the Penguin! It was definitely a more adult-themed, darker Batman and while it did have quite a few few humorous lines, it erred on the side of darkdrama. It was 85 min and was released in '05- I don't know how we missed this one.

If you like Batman and haven't seen this- rent it. It's worth seeing. :) (Vampire Joker? COOL!)

We also watched 28 Weeks Later- I liked it better this viewing than I did in the theater. I remember thinking it was too slow then. Ha.

I'll have to check out the Batman DVD. I watched Hard Candy recently. Damn on-line predators.

LauraK, I rented BUG and thought the performances in it were just amazing. The Judd chick was so totally believable, I actually wanted to swat bugs too.

I'm not sure what to make of it though. I really had to suspend disbelief when the room ended up tin-foiled and all the bug lights. Where in the hell did they get all that? Would a small town like Bumfuck, Egypt carry all that tinfoil and all those bug lights? Or was it not really there?

It definitely was one of those movies you have to think about.

Hm. I didn't think about that but it was a quick transition from no tin-foil to silver-city.

What I wondered was- was he truly screwed up by the government? Or was he just a psychotic nutjob? I mean, we couldn't see the bugs.....although in that first scene on the bed, when he insists it's there, I was straining as hard as she was to see something! I thought I didn't at first, then I thought- 'hey, it must be there! She saw it!'

Yes- I was getting the creepy-crawlies, too! I also agree that she gave a fine performance- very, very believable. She deserves a nomination for that role but I doubt she'll get it. Same with the guy.

The ending was a shock. I need to see it again.

I really liked Mr. Brooks. Kevin Costener is planning on doing a trilogy!

Is Mr Brooks the movie that co-stars Dane "I'm the worst comedian on the face of the earth" Cook? If so, please tell me he gets killed.
