I love love loved Donnie Darko...Until found out what the director was going for and what the movie was actually about... not such a fan now. Sometimes the truth destroys art. Sad.

It was intended to be Donnie is given super powers by an omnipotent future power/ being watching him doing experiments on how a normal person would react to power of strength, time manipulation and other such things. They also are supposed to be communicating to him through frank the bunny, and in the end they manipulate the airplane engine to kill Donnie so he would not catch on to what they had been doing. Essentially he wanted to do a super hero time travel movie... Maybe it's because I loved it so much when it was open to interpretation because I had such a different take on all of it, but alas now whenever I watch it I can not go back to how I felt before.

I have not watched The Box yet, I love the short story so much that i know they can not even start to do it justice, I also was told they essentially do the entire short in the first 20 min then it is just some crazy add on for no real reason at all... I will watch it soon though. I really love movies and the art of movies so I try to watch everything, the good, the bad and the ugly...

I would say tha they are partially right. The first 20-30 is the short story, then it goes off into Richard Kelly's world. To be honest, i did enjoy the movie...but, ive met the guy before and i have more endurance for him. I would say that the story is set up in the DARKO world that you just explained so well to BB...which to me wasnt a big deal..but TRUE lovers of the book may find the add on a little annoying....still, I enjoy his movies.

I originally thought so many things like my first impression was that Donnie was a sort of messiah, like a second coming, or a new god of some sort, not able to understand the things that were going on and in the end he chose to change his destiny and altered time and space to stop it before he ever had to go through the events, and at the end when everyone was sad woken up in the night he showed them a glimpse of what could have been.... my second thoughts were more like it was a shared dream, something to the extent that Donnie was some able to send out some sort of dream wave to everyone while they slept, sort of sent out a radio signal to all the people in his life... I really need to watch Donnie Darko again now and write a whole essay of interpretations.
