Terry Brooks Month

Postby Francesca on Sun Aug 02, 2009 3:56 pm

So anyway. I finally get to meet a REAL author. Terry Brooks is coming RIGHT HERE.
So I am calling August 2009 Terry Brooks month.

Muhammad is coming to the mountain. The mountain won't have to go to Muhammad.
I was getting tired of rock concerts anyway.
I've read The Elfstones Of Shannara and Armageddon's Children.
Now I guess will have to read more.

Terry Brooks was born in 1944 in Sterling, Illinois. He studied English literature and law in college. Before he became an author, he was a full-time practising attorney. He wrote his first novel, The Sword of Shannara, while he was still practising law. His primary influences are J.R.R. Tolkien and William Faulkner.

He has written 25 best-selling novels since 1977. His two major series are the Shannara novels and the Magic Kingdom of Landover books. He has developed a cult following of millions around the world. His epic and urban fantasy novels have often been compared and discussed in conjunction with his idol, Tolkien.

The Shannara novels are being adapted for film by Warner Bros. First in the series will be The Elfstones of Shannara, directed by Mike Newell of Harry Potter fame. Elfstones will begin production in 2009 and finish in 2010.

Terry Brooks currently writes and lives in Seattle with his wife, Judine.

I picked up the Gypsy Morph. It's really good. I like it. It's a lot darker than his early novels.

I'm meeting Margaret Atwood too in a few weeks. I've read 12 of her books. She used to be my favorite author... before Neil Gaiman came along.

The Con was OK. I went to 2 of Terry's sessions. He was nothing like I expected. It was weird seeing him come out of the loo. He's a normal person, just like the rest of us.

Then I came home and found out my friend Brenda died of cancer. I knew her for a decade. She was my roommate for 5 years until she got married. I didn't know she was ill. I found out from her husband. I wondered why she hadn't emailed me in months. Then I thought it would be weird if I got email from her tomorrow or next week. Sometimes emails get stuck in cyberspace for weeks, months or even years before they finally get delivered to their intended recipients. I've read too many horror novels. I wonder whose fault that is.

I skipped the rest of Terry's seminars. I didn't feel like going to them anymore. It seemed rather pointless and trivial at this time.

We have to appreciate people while they are still with us.
