Mine tend to be very eclectic, which probably mirrors my scattershot approach to reading 8)

Anyway, here are a few:

Mikhail Bulgakov
Joseph Conrad
Charles Dickens
Neil Gaiman
Stephen King
C. S. Lewis
Cormac McCarthy
Mervyn Peake
Terry Pratchett
Cervantes
Shakespeare (happy day-late birthday, Will!)
Tolstoy
Gene Wolfe
Of the trail of ink there is no end.

Wow, I loved reading through this thread! I love to read, and got several ideas for new authors to try. My favorites:
Stephen King-#1, always and forever.
John Irving-#2. The rest in no particular order
C.S. Lewis
Thomas Harris pre 'Hannibal'
Jan Karon
Louisa May Alcott
Janet Evanovich
Richard Matheson
John Steinbeck
Frederich Buechner
Ray Bradbury
Jane Austen
Charles Dickens
Flannery O'Connor
Barbara Kingsolver
Margaret Atwood
L.E. Brady-local author who really GETS guitar blues
I'll probably think of others, but this is the hot list.

Some of these gals and guys are Polish writers, so you might not know their names. Truth be told, you can't know their names ;).

Neil Gaiman
Frank Herbert
Roger Zelazny
Gene Wolfe
China Miéville
Charlie Stross
Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
Ray Bradbury
Łukasz Orbitowski
Marek S. Huberath
Jacek Dukaj
Wit Szostak
Brian Aldiss
Jane Austen
Anna Kańtoch
Alan Moore
Charlie Dickens ;)
Will Shakespeare
Mikhail Bulhakov
Terry Pratchett

I've surely forgotten someone but I know I'm forgiven as they don't even know I exist.

Well, except for most of the Polish ones, it's fairly easy to even drag them out for a drink or two if you're into Polish fandom ;).
And as I slit it open
It became clear to me that
Scalpel cuts are not as easy to close
As I'd suspected earlier.

Six pages and no one has mentioned Heinlein?

Or maybe I missed it...

Stephen King (the king of fiction)
Robert Jordan (R.I.P. I admire him as a vietnam war hero and an excellent writer. Been reading his wheel of time series forever and the guy kicks the bucket while working on the final installment. Still, no one can write a battle scene like RJ)
Neil Stephenson (have not read in a while but Cryptonomicon is excellent)
Terry Goodkind (finally finished his 10 novel or so long series which is gonna become an NBC series directed by the guy who did the spiderman movies)
Dean Koontz (either hit or miss with him but he writes enough that there are plenty of hits)
From the top of my head. I would also say Joe Hill but its too early to say though I have a feeling I will eventually admire the man as much as his old man.

I agree totally about Koontz..I love the Odd Thomas books, mainly because of the subtle humor...He cracks me up..I have to be careful and read slowly or else I skim right over a really funny line!!

Kurt Vonnegut
William Gibson
Neal Stephenson
Neil Gaiman
Jonathan Lethem
Chuck Palahniuk
Greg Bear
Robert Charles Wilson (the sci fi not the fantasy books)
Peter Straub
Margaret Atwood
Stephen King

I know I am missing some author I really love, but I am not at home to peek at the library.
