I thought THE TALISMAN was a little more "Dark Tower-ish" than his straight up horror. It seems a combination of both in a way. I liked it and I'm like your friend in that I like the scary stuff better than the tower books.

i tried to take my time but i finished it at about 1:30 pm. i feel a little ripped off over the price for what i consider a novella.

What was the price?
BTW, I went to his website and he has a book called Damned coming out next year that sounds pretty good. It's about a little girl who dies and goes to hell. Yikes!

it's 24.95 and 172 pages.
i only paid 18.00 but even still...thats pretty short.
i paid 9.00 for under the dome and i could bludgeon someone with the heft of that'un.

and i'll read Damned. He still has me for (at the very least) five disappointments. i haven't been disappointed yet but i think that's only because i'm not expecting fight club for infinity and basing all my opinions on whether they were fight club-y enough. fight club was a good book but it was a far better movie, and that is very rare.

I have to say that I'm gonna read DAMNED...I'm intrigued by the plot synopsis.

have you ever read "haunted" by chuck palahniuk. very twisted but entertaining mostly. if you're easily offended i'd steer clear of it. especially the story "guts"
it made me blush and i'm a pretty twisted weirdo myself.

I haven't read the whole book, but I did read "Guts". One thing I'll say for Chuck P....he is original! You simply never know what you're gonna get when you read his stuff!

I finished DROOD...really liked it. Simmons is a very interesting author. Just when you think you've got him pegged, he does something truly different. I would def recommend DROOD, especially if you are an English Major. I read a lot of Victorian literature in college and I was intrigued by Simmons ability to write in a similar style. You become truly immersed in the period. And it's really creepy, too.

Oh...hubby bought me a copy of THE GENESIS SECRET for Mother's Day. Reading it out of obligation. It's not the worst thing I've ever read, but it is becoming a chore. :(

Finally finished it. The serial killer in the book had studied ancient ways to torture & kill. It was pretty disturbing...and not in a good way.

Just started CARRION COMFORT by Dan Simmons. So far, so good. The only issue I have with it is I'm reading it in paperback and it's sooooooooo long that they had to make the print really tiny. My eyes start to give out after a half hour or so.

BTW, for any Harlan Ellison fans: SP is releasing an expanded, signed version of DEATHBIRD STORIES. I'm all over that for hubby! Did I ever mention that if we'd had a boy hubby wanted to name him "Harlan"?
